Gravitational Lensing at Millimeter Wavelengths

چکیده
The study of gas and dust at high redshift gives an unbiased view of star formation in obscured objects as well as the chemical evolution history of galaxies. With today’s millimeter and submillimeter instruments observers use gravitational lensing mostly as a tool to boost the sensitivity when observing distant objects. This is evident through the dominance of gravitationally lensed objects among those detected in CO rotational lines at z > 1. It is also evident in the use of lensing magnification by galaxy clusters in order to reach faint submm/mm continuum sources. There are, however, a few cases where millimeter lines have been directly involved in understanding lensing configurations. Future mm/submm instruments, such as the ALMA interferometer, will have both the sensitivity and the angular resolution to allow detailed observations of gravitational lenses. The almost constant sensitivity to dust emission over the redshift range z ≈ 1−10 means that the likelihood for strong lensing of dust continuum sources is much higher than for optically selected sources. A large number of new strong lenses are therefore likely to be discovered with ALMA, allowing a direct assessment of cosmological parameters through lens statistics. Combined with an angular resolution < 0 . 1, ALMA will also be efficient for probing the gravitational potential of galaxy clusters, where we will be able to study both the sources and the lenses themselves, free of obscuration and extinction corrections, derive rotation curves for the lenses, their orientation and, thus, greatly constrain lens models.

14011 + 0252 : a Strongly Lensed , Ultraluminous Galaxy , Not a Huge , Massive Disk
We used the IRAM Interferometer to detect CO(3–2), CO(7–6), and 1.3 mm dust continuum emission from the submillimeter galaxy SMM J14011+0252 at z = 2.6. Contrary to a recent claim that the CO was extended over 6.6 ′′ (57 kpc), the new data yield a size of 2 ′′ × ≤ 0.5 ′′ for the CO and the dust. Although previous results placed the CO peak in a region with no visible counterpart, the new maps s...
متن کاملSubmillimeter Galaxy Number Counts and Magnification by Galaxy Clusters
We present an analytical model which reproduces measured galaxy number counts from surveys in the wavelength range of 500 μm to 2 mm. The model involves a single high-redshift galaxy population with a Schechter luminosity function which has been gravitationally lensed by galaxy clusters in the mass range 10 to 10M⊙. This simple model reproduces both the low flux and the high flux end of the num...
متن کاملStrong Lensing by Subhalos in the Dwarf-galaxy Mass Range Ii: Detection Probabilities
The dark halo substructures predicted by current cold dark matter simulations may in principle be detectable through strong-lensing image splitting of quasars on small angular scales (0.01 arcseconds or below). Here, we estimate the overall probabilities for lensing by substructures in a host halo closely aligned to the line of sight to a background quasar. Under the assumption that the quasar ...
متن کاملOn the density profile of dark matter substructure in gravitational lens galaxies
We consider three extensions of the Navarro, Frenk and White (NFW) profile and investigate the intrinsic degeneracies among the density profile parameters on the gravitational lensing effect of satellite galaxies on highly magnified Einstein rings. In particular, we find that the gravitational imaging technique can be used to exclude specific regions of the considered parameter space, and there...
متن کاملInterferometric Observations of Redshifted Molecular Absorption toward Gravitational Lenses
We have made radioand millimeter-wavelength interferometric observations of a variety of molecular absorption lines toward the gravitational lens systems B0218+357 and PKS 1830−211. The absorption occurs in the lensing galaxies at redshifts of 0.685 and 0.89, respectively. The high spatial resolution of our VLA and VLBA observations allows imaging of the background continuum emission and the ab...
